Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
