Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
