The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold critique addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty along with the feared consequences of growing older. This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the children anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices offering help, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain manages to show the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, Film4
This Espionage Thriller
